Studio 6mm Wins Silver at AIA Philadelphia Annual Awards Ceremony
Studio 6mm is honored to have been awarded the 2022 Silver Medal in the ‘Unbuilt’ Category at the AIA Philadelphia Awards for Design Excellence for our work on the Rev. Leon H. Sullivan Community Impact Center.
The Silver Medal is awarded at the design jury’s discretion to recognize a single unbuilt project of the most exemplary design quality.
Jury Comments: “This proposed reuse of an existing important historic building suggests modest interventions to create remarkable new community spaces. The program is simultaneously inventive and appropriate – extending the life of an important civil rights church to positively impact the community it serves. The proposed spaces include small modifications that work with the existing building to create something thoroughly new and compelling. The name “impact center” seems completely fitting.”
The project seeks to reimagine a building that began its life in the 1920’s as a church, became a community hub/center in the 1960s, was used again as a church in the 1970’s, and has most recently sat vacant since the early 2000’s. The planned future for this 28,000 square foot building includes an E-Sports entertainment venue, Conference Center, Artist Studios, Arts Classrooms, and tenant spaces service Temple University. The project is currently in design and construction is anticipated to begin in 2023.
