Viking Mills Artist Studios

Artist Studio Space in Philadelphia’s Kensington Neighborhood.

Viking Mills is a vibrant artist’s community in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood that houses studio space for painters, welders, recording studios, wood workers, cinematographers, and jewelry makers. Studio 6mm worked with Viking Mills LLC to perform an existing conditions assessment of the 70,000 square foot building originally constructed in the 1860’s. Originally a factory for the production of fabric, the building required a comprehensive assessment its infrastructure and ability to serve the many varied uses housed within its walls. Studio 6mm surveyed the existing structure, analyzed the performance of the building in its current configuration, and made recommendations to improve life safety, building performance, and phasing of future work. Issues regarding life safety, structural remediation, building use, and occupancy were addressed during the scope of the project.
